The Crisis in PDP Lagos State
By Chief Femi Robinson
If we must be honest to ourselves, Chief Olabode George
and Senator Musiliu Obanikoro are not the issue in the
crisis in Lagos State PDP. Party members are only using
the unfortunate situation to settle once and for all an
issue most political parties in Nigeria have not been
able to find answers to. Who is supreme, the party or
the leader? In Lagos State PDP, democracy is at work and
as far as I am concerned it is a welcomed development..
There are today two distinct camps in the PEOPLES
DEMOCRATIC PARTY in Lagos State not three. There are
those who want the status quo to remain and those
calling for a change. To any right thinking democrat,
this is what politics is all about. The National
Executive of the party had called for reconciliation of
aggrieved party members. Aggrieved members should not be
limited to those who have left the party. What about
those who because they do not want to rock the boat had
been compromising all these days? What of those who
believe in the party but not the present leadership or
structure in Lagos State? It is obvious that in an
attempt not to rock the boat some people who could have
given the party a new lease of life resigned or were
sidelined. Others have and are still being given names
their parents never gave to them at birth to crucify
them.
Actions like those employed by some members of the party
who employed thugs to prevent aggrieved members from
presenting their complaints to the reconciliation panel
in Abeokuta are not democratic. Some utterances by some
leaders also in the name of the party had been tearing
the party further apart. This is an appeal to party
members to accommodate each others opinion. The crisis
in Lagos State PDP is more than a leadership tussle.
